The name "The Chicken Run' was coined for a 'passed' member who had the nickname 'Chicken George' being the son of poultry farmers, I guess.  Since then, it has been a descriptive name for a memorial run our club, Scenic City, has held each September for the past 4 years to remember Shane Neighbour; and now, also to remember Greg Bruce, who passed away Monday of Taranaki Anniversary weekend in 2005. We also remember Bernie Dellar and other 'passed' members who have been a vital part of our club and our lives. The photos of the headstones, taken this month, are to remember Shane and Greg and no disrespect is meant to their families and friends, but an encouragement to them that we also miss them.  Maybe we can take a lesson in this, and make the most of opportunities to encourage and support others here and now before we're 'gone too soon.'
This Chicken Run was held Sunday, 24th September, 2006.  Possum organised this years run, due to the fact of winning the previous years run.  We met at Awanui Cemetary and visited for a while, then cruised up to a pre-arranged visit to the Base Hospital for the patients to view some eye candy.  After standing around and looking into engine cavities for about an hour (see photo), we cruised off the Lake Mangamahoe for a picnic and games afternoon.  Although we didnt have many entrants, the bulk of the members preferring to sit and talk, the competitiveness was good, with the combined efforts of Mike and Colin destroying the bucket with the piston toss.  Thanks to Possum and Leonie on the BBQ, Lynda Bennett and others buttering bread and generally making themselves indispensable.  A brilliant afternoon.
